Introduction to Overnight Backpacking Intensive

Hiwassee/Ocoee State Park Visitor Center
Hiwassee/Ocoee Rivers State Park is offering one (3.5 hour intensive course) to prepare you for successful backcountry backpacking. The following weekend after this intensive course, we will embark on a free overnight backpacking trip within the Cherokee National Forest. The trip will be led by seasoned backpacker and 2018 Appalachian Trail thru-hiker, Ranger Jeremy Sorensen.
The intensive course will cover the following topics:
1st Session
Backpacking Basics: An Overview
The BIG 3 (Shelter, Sleep & Pack Systems)
How to choose and organize your pack
Proper clothing, footwear & gear
2nd Session
Trail Meal Prep
How to hang & secure your bear bag
Water Filtration
Trail Hygiene
3rd Session
Healthy Parks Heathy Person (Personal Fitness)
Basic Survival: An Overview
Trip Planning
Navigation & Map Reading
Overnight Trip: Saturday & Sunday 3/25/2022-3/26/2022 or on 4/2/2022-4/3/2022 (Pending Weather)
We will conduct an overnight guided backpacking trip! This excursion will consist of approximately (10 miles) of moderate hiking total. This is the perfect opportunity to test out your winter gear in backcountry conditions. The pre-determined location will be announced on 3/31/2021 at class and it will be delivered via phone and email.
Free Overnight Trip Conditions: You will need to be able to provide your own transportation, gear and food for this event.
When/Where: Saturday day class will begin at 1:00pm (EST) at the Gee Creek Campground Visitor Center (404 Spring Creek Rd. Delano, TN 37325).
