4/20 Inaugural Chilhowee Mountain Ultra Marathon Polk, TN

On April 20, 2024, the inaugural Chilhowee Mountain Ultra Marathon will invite runners to the historical and scenic landscapes of Benton, Tennessee. This event offers a unique opportunity to explore the rugged beauty of Chilhowee Mountain through two challenging distances: a 50k with over 6,000 feet of elevation gain and a 25k for those seeking a shorter yet rewarding experience. The races start and finish at the Chilhowee Campground, which sits at an elevation of 1853 feet, providing runners with breathtaking views and a glimpse into the rich natural heritage of the area. The race has rented the Group Campsite, so we have space for 50 tent campers. The campsites are free and are on a first come first served basis. There are also tent and RV sites available in the Chilhowee Campground. All runners will receive a race shirt and a finisher award!
The Chilhowee Mountain area is steeped in history, with the mountain itself serving as a landmark within the Cherokee National Forest. The region has been a site of significance for centuries, first to the Native American populations and later to settlers and outdoor enthusiasts. The Chilhowee Recreation Area, near where the race starts, is named after a Cherokee village that once existed near the mountain’s base, highlighting the deep cultural roots embedded in the landscape. The area around Benton Falls, one of the highlights of the 50k course, showcases the pristine beauty that has attracted nature lovers for generations.
The 50k course is meticulously designed to challenge even seasoned ultra runners, featuring landmarks such as Benton Falls, Rattlesnake Hollow, Bean Mountain, and Oswald Dome. Each site offers a unique terrain and elevation challenge, coupled with stunning natural beauty. The race includes four aid stations, positioned to assist runners as they navigate the fluctuating elevations, from the lower points at the Hiwassee River (800 ft) and Ocoee River/Parksville Lake (900 ft) to the higher elevations of Oswald Dome at 3,022 ft.
The Chilhowee Mountain Ultra Marathon is more than a race; it’s an opportunity to connect with the history and natural beauty of one of Tennessee’s most scenic areas. Participants will not only challenge their physical and mental limits but also become part of the rich tradition of ultra marathons, pushing the boundaries of what is possible. We invite you to join us for this inaugural event, to experience the breathtaking landscapes, the challenge of the terrain, and the camaraderie of the trail running community. Whether you’re an experienced ultra runner or looking to embark on your first ultra distance, the Chilhowee Mountain Ultra Marathon offers an unforgettable adventure.
